

It begins simply, but eventually twists into scientific theory and ruminates on the nature of reality and the needs of the few versus the many. Most surprising is the rich story, which is often neglected in this genre. Some fights skew toward reflex skills, others serve as high-pressure puzzles, and for some it’s just a matter of finding the perfect gun for the job. They hit the sweet spot for me where it takes a couple deaths to figure out their patterns and weak spots, but I could get further each time until scoring a victory. Bosses range from creatures like a scorpion or wasp to a massive laser-blasting plant to a humanoid soldier similar to the Cabal in Destiny. Elsenova also reveals that the monsters Trace encounters are Athetos’s former followers, warped by the pathogen they once spread.

The second, Katrahashka, was killed by the other Rusalki after siding with Athetos. Elsenova explains that the first, Veruska, is a dangerous ally who has power over dreams. On the way, Trace discovers two more Rusalki. Trace agrees to reactivate the Rusalki’s repair drones and revive Ophelia to get more answers. Elsenova claims that another Rusalka, Ophelia, entered the Breach and found Trace inside. Athetos could not defeat the Rusalki and instead trapped them by enveloping Sudra in the Breach using a special machine. The only survivors were the Rusalki, a race of mechanical giants like Elsenova. LamentumĪ man named Athetos emerged from the Breach and eradicated the Sudrans with a pathogen. The people of Sudra kept the Breach in check. Elsenova then explains the universe is made up of several worlds separated by a storm called the Breach. She instructs him to find and repair a nearby “Power Filter” to restore her. Trace eventually finds the voice’s source: a massive, broken mechanical head named Elsenova. Trace dies several times on his way to the voice, but reawakens inside a machine each time. Mutants muttering the word “Athetos” block his way. A disembodied voice guides him to a weapon – the Axiom Disruptor – and tells him to fight his way to her. Players can use this to hit targets that are not in a direct line of sight. The other ways is to detonate it while it’s mid-air and make it split into 6 pieces. In this game, the developer made sure those possibilities not only existed but hopes that players will discover and use them.

Anyone who has played older 2D platform type games remembers the feeling they get when they find a way to glitch something out in the game and go into areas or do things they weren’t expected to be able to do. One of the features that is unique to this game compared to other metroidvania games is the use of glitches. It will be up to players to uncover the truth about this new world as well as Trace’s role in it. Players play as Trace, a scientist who awoke after a lab explosion only to find himself in a strange new environment. The large weapon arsenal goes beyond anything I’ve seen in the genre. While the Metroid DNA runs through every environment, at no point does it feel like a retread through Zebes. There are even bubble clusters that disappear and reform when you attack. The first area is the most direct homage to Metroid, with small creatures creeping along the ground and ceiling and swarms of bugs dive-bombing you. Each zone has a unique identity, theme song, and enemy roster. The world is one massive, interconnected cave network. He wakes up in a strange place, enlisted to help massive (but barely functional) robots. Something goes wrong, and there is a terrible explosion. Your character, Trace, is conducting an experiment in his lab in the middle of the night.
